Knight: Give thanks for the farmer, too

At this Thanksgiving holiday, most of us travel to see family or prepare to welcome family into our homes. More than any other day of the year, this holiday embodies the spirit of homecoming.

In the spirit of the homecoming this holiday, we need look no further than our local farmer for this abundance and good fortune.

Most farmers have come in from the fields now after harvesting a year’s worth of hard work. Our efforts will feed, clothe, and house the world for another year.

Many people in our country have forgotten the role of the farmer. Farmers are more than simply providing food for the world. Farmers are the cornerstone of our economy – especially here in Mississippi. The farming industry touches everyone even if you live in a large city and have never driven a tractor. Of course, farmers provide the food we consume, but beyond that, truck drivers, researchers, scientists, ag suppliers, equipment dealers, clothing salesmen – all of these, and many more, have jobs because of agriculture.

Our Farm Families of Mississippi media campaign strives to tell the story of the farmer and all that he or she provides to the consumer everyday.

This Thanksgiving, as you gather around your dinner table and give thanks to our Creator for all his divine blessings, it is fitting that we thank Him for the men and women of agriculture who use all of the resources God provides to improve the quality of our lives.

May God bless each of you and keep you safe this holiday season.
